BGSB athletics team competed in the Bury Schools Athletics Championship

On Wednesday 4th July the BGSB athletics team competed in the Bury Schools Athletics Championship, which is the final and biggest fixture of the season with 12 schools from the local area taking part. Athletes scored points for finishing in the top 6 positions.

The event started with the finals of the 800m and 1500m. Traditionally BGSB has struggled in the long distance events but this year we achieved our highest points total from long distance events. Special mention should go to Tom Dalziel, Sebastian Thompson and Joshua Nabb who all picked up points in the 800m. In the 1500m final Ben Chadwick and Alex Baker also picked up vital points which gave BGSB a good start to the day.

Whilst the long distance finals were taking place on the track boys were also competing in field events. Wins for Joshua Nabb in the long jump and Joseph Bangbala in the high jump were followed by a second place finish for Chuk Uuruuka in the triple jump and Kairo Fellone in the discus and a third place for Alex Lee in the long jump. Special mention should also go to Justin Ahaneku (shot putt), Joshu Nabb (triple jump), and Joey Ururuka (high jump) who all scored vital points to ensure BGSB were amongst the leading teams.

After some intense heats for the sprint events and relay teams and a number of boys qualified for the finals. In the 100m finals Joshua Jennings and Chuk Ururuka both finished 4th whilst Joey Ururuka finished 2nd. Strong performances in the heats meant that both Ururuka brothers qualified for the 200m finals with Chuk finishing 6th and Joey finishing 3rd. In the 400m finals BGS also performed well with Alex Lee finishing 3rd and Juba Lawal finishing 2nd.

Heading into the 4x100m relay finals BGSB were in second place behind Philips High School in both the Year 8/9 competition and the Year 10/11 competition. Both relay teams performed exceptionally well as the Year 8/9 team finished 2nd and the Year 10/11 team finished 1st. Unfortunately, both relay teams from Philips High School also performed well and BGSB finished both age categories in 2nd place.

This event was excellent end to a rewarding athletics season. I would like to thank all boys who have taken part in athletics fixtures this year and we looking forward to another packed season of athletics next year.
