The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme is an internationally recognised award giving young people the opportunity to develop new and existing skills in a non competitive environment.
From Year 10 onwards boys can enrol in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at Bury Grammar School Boys. They enrol on the Bronze Award at the start of Year 10. Boys who complete this before starting Year 11 are invited to enrol on the Silver Award. At the start of their L6th year all boys may enrol on the prestigious Gold Award.
Each year our students participate in activities as varied as chess, cookery, martial arts, horse riding, ballet, charity work and sports teams to name a few. Alongside the independently organised activities the boys train to complete the expedition element under the guidance of school staff. Using local venues and facilities as well as more remote areas in Wales and the Lake District the Award enables all boys to demonstrate a wide variety of skills such as team work, leadership and resilience.
Each year we have around 60 to 70 boys in the school working towards their DofE Award. Completion rates are excellent showing just how committed and dedicated our boys are and enabling us to celebrate their achievements in our annual Prize Giving programme.
