What's been happening in the Infant School - 09/11/2018

In Reception this week we have been learning all about Diwali, the festival of lights.

The festival is observed by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains, with its main theme being the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil.

The children were enthralled by the legendary story of Lord Rama and his beautiful wife Sita defeating the evil ten headed demon king Ravanna.

The children have been making Diwali cards, decorating (paper) hands with mehndi patterns, drawing many headed demons, re-enacting the story and making clay diyas to light a candle in.

We are enjoying expanding our knowledge of different communities and appreciating their special traditions.

Year 1

This week in Maths we have been using the words ‘bigger than’ and ‘smaller than’.

We have used them to describe numbers and objects.

One group ordered objects according to size and then compared them.

Another group completed this activity with numbers and completed some super number sentences.

Our topic this half term is all about the weather – watch out for our budding weather forecasters!

Year 2

To kick start our topic on Towers, Turrets and Tunnels, Year 2 have been busy doing their own independent research about castles.

They have built and labelled their own castles, made fact files, photo albums and presentations.

We have been really impressed with their knowledge and quality of work.

Over the next few weeks we will be learning even more and even have a visit to a castle to look forward to!
