Assessment & Reporting

Frequent feedback to students and parents is an important part of our academic ethos at Bury Grammar School. All students are regularly assessed in line with our assessment policy and progress is reported to parents in a variety of ways creating clear pathways to success for every student.

Interim Assessments

Interim assessments are completed by subject staff during the penultimate week of each half term. They provide a ‘snapshot’ of a student’s academic achievement and attitude to learning over the course of the half term.

Academic attainment is based on classwork, homework and any formal assessments over the course of the half term. If there are concerns highlighted in any area of the report, Form Tutors, Heads of Department or Heads of Year will meet with the Student to identify strategies for improvement and in some cases, arrange to meet parents.

We conduct national standardised tests through the CEM centre at Durham University. ALIS tests in Y12 generate predictions for A Level examinations and highlight areas of study where a student may have a particular strength or weakness. We use these predictions to track academic progress and identify areas where an individual may require tailored support or encouragement.

Attitude to Learning grades reflect the levels of effort, organisation and approach to academic study. Students who demonstrate consistently high levels of effort are recognised through rewards from Form Tutors, Heads of Year and Senior Staff.

Formal Assessments

There are two periods of formal assessment for Year 12 during the academic year. One at the start of the Spring Term followed by the summer examination period at the end of the academic year. These examination scores will be sent home along with interim grades. Examination timetables will be published ahead of the summer examination period and Form Tutors and Heads of Year are on hand to advise and support the Students.

Year 13 complete their mock examinations in the formal setting of the examination hall, at the start of the Spring Term. The examination timetable will be published ahead of the Christmas break and the results published to Students and parents shortly after the end of the assessments.

Written Reports

Year 12 can expect a full written report twice a year. Year 13 will receive a full written report during the Spring Term ahead of study leave and their A Level examinations.

Communication

The dialogue between subject specialists, students and parents is essential to ensure that our students reach their full potential and that students and parents feel supported in their academic journey. This communication occurs as part of our Academic Intervention programme which aims to identify areas requiring support or advice through meetings and communication with home.
