In a playoff deciding fixture, the U15s faced close rivals St Gabriel’s. Both teams entered with winning records and it showed in the first 10 minutes, with the defence of both teams stifling attacks which led to a 2-2 scoreline at the end of the first quarter.
After winning their first two games with relative ease, BGS struggled to move the ball on offense as easily but played with a great deal of defensive energy.
As the game progressed, the defences loosened up and scoring began to come more quickly but with less than four minutes remaining, BGS found themselves 25-21 down.
Excellent defensive play stopped opposition attacks and Abdullah Randhawa was able to take advantage of some quick baskets to leave the teams level at 26-26 at the final whistle.
With five minutes of overtime to be played, BGS quickly fell behind 28-26 but two vital points from captain Jack Hyde lifted the team before Abdullah sunk the final two points to give BGS an exhilarating 30-28 victory.
While Abdullah led the scoring with 19 points, all players should be commended for the excellent defence they played and can look forward to next week’s playoff semi-finals.
