Dorothy Lester Travel Scholarship awarded to  Elizabeth

Each year the Old Girls’ Association award a travel scholarship in memory of a much-loved Headmistress, Dorothy Lester.

The recipient of this year’s award is Year 13 pupil Elizabeth who will be travelling as part of Real Gap, which is a non-governmental organisation, to Accra in Ghana for 2 weeks to work as a volunteer teacher.

She will have an acclimatisation period when she can learn something of the community in which she will be involved. She will then commute from Teshie where she is based to one of the local junior schools.

Teaching is her chosen career path so this opportunity to teach will be particularly valuable to her as she embarks upon a Primary Education with Qualified Teacher Status Degree in September.

As well as planning and delivering lessons in Maths, English and Social Studies she will also be expected to take part in extra-curricular activities which will allow her to use her rugby coaching qualification.

She is a devoted young carer who is driven to support all children and especially those with learning difficulties to reach their full potential.

She is keen to learn about another culture and knows that this experience will give her confidence and independence as she embarks on the next stage of her career.

Elizabeth was presented with the £400 award on the last day before study leave began. The award is also acknowledged at Prize Giving.
