For the last term, the Eco Schools Team has been working hard towards their goal of making Bury Grammar School environmentally and ecologically sound.
The Eco Schools initiative is a global project that encourages schools to reduce their carbon footprint by working towards common goals.
Our Eco School Committee is made up of pupils and staff from all five schools. They meet regularly to plan and discuss their next course of action. The main topic for the last term has been to reduce the school's energy waste. The committee's action plan for this is underway with a whole school drive to switch off lights and computers when not in use. They will be monitoring the energy use in school with the help of our new software and will even be operating spot checks on departments to ensure that everyone is on board!
In January, alongside the energy topic the committee will be looking at two new areas - litter and waste. There are some fantastic plans afoot here with paper recycling bags being introduced into each classroom; Infant and Junior School litter monitors being appointed and plans to drastically reduce the amount of plastic used in our school. There are even plans to use some of the collected waste for a whole school art project!
We all have a responsibility to protect our planet and to preserve it for future generations and Bury Grammar School is committed to this goal. However, although the committee is currently doing a fantastic job, this has got to be a team effort on a larger scale. We would like all of you to get involved in whatever way you can. Could you reduce the amount of plastic you bring into school? Could you check that the classroom light is switched off if you are last one to leave? If you see litter in the playgrounds or corridors, do you pick it up? It is imperative that we all play our part.
If you would like to get involved in the Eco Schools project then we would love to hear from you. Parents - perhaps this is your area of expertise? If so, and you would like to get involved then do not hesitate to contact us.
Together, we really can make a difference.
