Year 5 girls from Bury Grammar School dressed up as Victorians and stepped back in time to travel to Quarry Bank Mill in Styal last week. The 9 and 10 year old girls were set to work in the mill picking cotton from the floors, sweeping and 'piecing.'
They heard all about the gruesome accidents which were common in the mills, but luckily they emerged unscathed and headed to the strict discipline of the Victorian classroom. The mill has its own medical room and the jars of leeches were on hand if any of the girls were feeling under the weather.
After visiting the laundry room and the Victorian toilets, the girls were ready to head back to the 21st Century after a fascinating glimpse of local life 200 years ago.
