In Year 3, children progress into one of the two single sex Junior Schools: Bury Grammar School Boys Juniors or Bury Grammar School Girls Juniors. We welcome applications into all year groups.
Pupils are invited to spend a day in school during which time they will be assessed whilst joining in with normal lessons and activities and will be observed interacting with their peers. They also sit papers in English and Mathematics so we can be sure they have the ability to keep up with the pace of learning at BGS. Parents should be assured that we are aware children come to us from a variety of educational backgrounds and with many different previous schooling experiences, and we are above all looking for potential and a desire to learn.
We may also seek a reference from the Head of the pupil’s current school, who would typically be asked to comment upon academic ability, attitude, behaviour, talents and interests and any other special circumstances, such as a disability.
During the Admissions process, parents would be invited to meet one-to-one with the Head to discuss their aspirations for their child. The home-school partnership is extremely important to us and we need to be reassured that parents support our philosophy and ethos and wish to work together with us to support their child; we also enjoy meeting with you as parents and want to find out as much as we can about your child!
Offers of places are made to successful candidates shortly after their visits.
Junior pupils who join us before or at the beginning of Year 5 are exempt from sitting the 11+ Entrance Examination for entry into Senior School because we are confident that the quality of education we provide in our excellent Junior Schools prepares our pupils perfectly for the rapid pace of learning in our Senior Schools.
